Det kan dog være meget god og nyttig viden at vide hvad en IP-adresse er, da den faktisk har stor betydning for dit internetbrug. I denne artikel vil vi gå i dybden med hvad en IP-adresse er.
En IP-adresse er en række tal, som er opdelt mellem punktummer. Dette nummer bruges af internetudbydere, hjemmesider og services til at kunne identificere en enhed der benytter sig af internettet. Sådan en enhed kan f.eks. være din computer, mobil, tablet, printer, router, og meget mere – alle produkter der bruger internettet. ”IP” er en forkortelse for ”Internet Protokol”, og en Internet Protokol er et bestemt ”regelsæt”, som styrer hvordan nettet, dataterminaludstyr og andre lignende services skal sende data til hinanden. I IT-verdenen kaldes det også, at Internet Protokollen styrer det sprog, som de forskellige online enheder bruger til at kommunikere med hinanden. Internet Protokollen er standard over hele verdenen, og uanset hvilken online enhed du har, kører den uden tvivl gennem en IP-adresse. Internettet/Hjemmesider bruger altså disse IP-adresser til at vide, hvor alle de massevis af data og informationer de modtager skal sendes hen.
Er men flere i samme husstand der benytter sig af husets trådløse internet (WI-FI) vil i helt automatisk bruge internettet under den samme IP-adresse. Grunden til dette er at et trådløst internet altid oprettet forbindelse til internettet gennem sin egen unikke IP-adresse, og alle enheder som kommer på internettet gennem dette trådløse internet, vil derfor køre gennem dets IP-adresse. Når du starter en enhed på, bliver IP-adressen til din enhed helt automatisk tildelt, og det er selvfølgelig også derfor at du ikke har haft behov for aktivt at gøre noget ved din IP-adresse.
Nu ved du hvad en IP-adresse er, men ved du hvordan en IP-adresse ser ud? Du har sikkert en svag ide om, hvordan en typisk IP-adresse ser ud. En normal IP-adresse er skabt af et længere nummer af tal, som deles op mellem punktummer. Med punktummerne deles tallene nemlig op i ”sæt” af tal, og dette er med til at gøre IP-adressen helt unik.

Nu ved du altså helt præcist hvad en IP-adresse er, hvorfor den eksisterer og hvad den egentligt gør.
